Paris Olympics 2024 — Day 16 latest
The United States has topped the medal table at the 2024 Paris Olympics with 40 gold medals, finishing above China by virtue of their 44 silvers.
China also won 40 golds but managed only 27 silvers.
The United States women’s basketball team won the final event of the Games, beating host nation France in a thrilling final decided by just a single point.
Earlier in the day, the Netherlands’ Sifan Hassan won gold in the women’s marathon in a sprint finish to secure her third medal of the Paris Olympics, while American gymnast Jordan Chiles was stripped of the bronze medal she won in Monday’s women's floor final.

Costas, Michaels make guest appearances on NBC
Bob Costas and Al Michaels are back at the Olympics. The famed sports announcers — who starred on NBC’s Olympic television broadcasts for years — made guest appearances Sunday for the network’s coverage of the Paris Games.
Costas and Michaels reminisced on previous Olympic Games hosted by U.S. cities and highlighted past achievements by American athletes, including Carl Lewis, Kerri Strug and the 1980 gold-medal winning men’s hockey team, in advance of the next Summer Olympics heading to Los Angeles in 2028.

32 captivating photos from each event of the Games
The Olympic Games are a global obsession, captivating myself and my colleagues with thrilling wins and viral athlete TikToks. Iconic moments caught on camera, like Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina’s reaction to catching a massive wave, remind us why we can’t get enough.
As the Managing Editor of Design at The Athletic, I have spent countless hours sifting through Olympic photos and was surprised to discover so many hidden gems. Inspired by these finds, I’ve curated a selection of my favorite shots from each of the 32 Olympic events.
Which one stands out to you?
Imane Khelif files complaint over online harassment
A lawyer for Algerian Imane Khelif says the gold medal-winning boxer has asked prosecutors in Paris to look into online harassment she faced during the Olympics about her gender and presence at the Games.
The lawyer, Nabil Boudi, said in a statement on Instagram that his firm had filed a complaint with the online hate unit of the Paris prosecutor’s office. It was not immediately clear where the complaint would lead. The Associated Press reported Sunday that under French law, it would be up to prosecutors to decide if an investigation is merited and who might be at fault.
Khelif faced a torrent of negative attention on social media after she won her first bout in the 66-kilogram (145-pound) division with an unusually swift stoppage. Her opponent, Angela Carini of Italy, quit the bout within 46 seconds after squarely taking some hard punches from Khelif, including one to the nose that left her complaining that she couldn’t properly breathe.
Khelif was assigned female at birth and the International Olympic Committee has repeatedly affirmed her qualifications to compete in a women’s division. But the knockout drew attention to a decision by the International Boxing Association last year to disqualify Khelif and another boxer, Lin Yu-ting, from its world championships. (Lin won a gold medal on Saturday night.)
France secure their 64th medal of the Games
France may have suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the women’s basketball final — but Les Bleus still delivered on President Emmanuel Macron’s challenge to deliver 50-60 Olympic medals at their home Games.
The women’s basketball team’s set of silver medals was France’s 64th in total, their highest number since the 1900 Games which were also held in Paris.
They won 16 golds in total to finish fifth in the medal table, behind only the United States, China, Japan and Australia and ahead of neighboring Britain and Germany.
USA edge classic final
What an extraordinary gold medal match that was.
Just when it looked as though France had levelled things at the buzzer, it transpired Gabby Williams was on the line and thus it was only worth two points.
The final score is 67-66 and the USA have still not lost a women's basketball match since Barcelona 1992.
The perfect end to these Olympics, a battle for the ages.
Climber intercepted by police after attempting to scale the Eiffel Tower
A bizarre story on the final day of the Olympics.
A police statement reads: "At 2.45 pm, an individual was seen climbing the Eiffel Tower. The police immediately intervened and arrested the individual."
Videos were doing the rounds on social media of the culprit making his way up the iconic landmark without ropes and joking to the watching bystanders, "bloody warm, innit."
Fortunately the police intervened before things became too dangerous.

USA lead with one quarter remaining
What an extraordinary quarter that was.
At one stage, France led by 10 points.
At the buzzer, though, the Americans are up 45-43. It feels like there are plenty of twists and turns left in this one.
Wrestling: Seven medals for the USA
The United States’ freestyle wrestling squad won seven medals, including two golds, in Paris.
Among the female wrestlers, Sarah Hildebrant (50 kilos) and Amit Elor (68kg, pictured) each won gold with dominant 3-0 victories. Elor is a current wrestler at Diablo Valley College. Kennedy Blades (76kg), who will wrestle at Iowa this fall, won the silver while Helen Maroulis (57kg) took bronze.
Among the male wrestlers, former Iowa wrestler Spencer Lee (57kg) led the way with a silver. Penn State’s Aaron Brooks (86kg) and former Cornell wrestler Kyle Dake (74kg) each took bronze. Former Ohio State wrestler 2016 Olympic gold medalist Kyle Snyder (97kg) lost in a bronze medal match.
Women’s wrestlers who did not medal include Dom Parrish (53kg) and Kayla Miracle (62kg). Men’s wrestlers Zain Retherford (65kg) and Mason Parris (125kg) did not medal. Retherford wrestled at Penn State while Parris competed at Michigan.
Basketball: The teams can't be separated at half time
A reminder that the Americans have not lost a women's basketball match at the Olympics since all the way back in 1992.
The hosts France are certainly holding their own here and it's level at the break, 25-25.
Is there a shock on the cards for USA?
Water polo: Serbia take men's gold
The Serbians have joined the ranks of the immortals.
Only Great Britain in the earlier part of the last century and Hungary from 2000 to 2008 have ever previously won three consecutive Olympic gold medals in water polo.
Serbia's 13-11 win over Croatia ensures they can be talked about as one of the great teams.
The women's basketball is underway
The final event of Paris 2024 has begun.
The hosts France are taking on defending champions USA in the gold medal game.
The French have home advantage but the American women's team haven't lost since way back in 1992. What a way to end the Olympics. Read all about it here.

Handball: Denmark win men's handball gold
It is only the third time in history the reigning world champion has won gold at the Olympics, following on from Croatia in 2004 and France in 2012.
The Danes beat Germany 39-26 with Mathias Gidsel contributing an extraordinary 11 goals.
Denmark will be delighted to pick up their second gold medal of the games, and on the final day.
Sebastian Coe ‘considering’ IOC presidential bid
Former running champion Sebastian Coe is “considering” putting his name forward to replace Thomas Bach as the president of the International Olympic Committee.
Coe, a former British runner and the current president of World Athletic, helped to organize the London 2012 Games and has long been considered a potential replacement for Bach.
Bach, 70, announced this week that he would step down from his role in 2025.
At a news conference to conclude the track and field programme at the Paris Games Coe, 67, said he had not yet decided to run but was considering it.
“I’ve always made it clear that if and when the opportunity arose, I would obviously give it serious thought,” he said. “The opportunity has arisen and clearly I need to think about it.”
United States now just one gold behind China…
Jennifer Valente’s gold medal in the women’s omnium is the United States’ 39th gold at these Olympics — putting it one behind China on the final day of the Games.
The U.S., which leads the overall medal count with 125, can tie for first in gold medals if the women’s basketball team defeats France in the next couple of hours.
