Does anybody know if this is a good generator? Seems like a good deal to be $300 off and 9200W capacity. Our neighborhood has occasional power outages so it would be good to have a backup power source. We have 2 fridges, 3 furnaces, 3 AC compressors, washer, dryer, dishwasher, TVs, etc. I'm curious if this could run all three HVAC zones.

Personally, I don't like Gasoline only generators (for occasional uses) because gas goes bad and it takes more maintenance than a propane or natural gas operated (think dual/tri-fuel) generators.

One could use a conversion kit but with the added cost and effort, I'd rather get one that supports gas out of the box.

I seriously doubt this generator would be able to service everything you need. With all of that power consumption, you probably want a hardwired backup generator with at least 16k if not 20+kw. I have a 10K stand alone with a whole house 50A plug on the main box. When we are in full consumption mode the air conditioning is running, TVs, appliances, etc and we try to run the microwave, it really taxes the generator (but it does handle it, barely). All that being said, this is a pretty darn good deal for a Generac that is basically 10K.

It's a good price for a 9,000 watt generator with pretty good reviews. Just wish it had auto-idle and I'm curious what the THD is on this unit.

No it won't run all that. But this is a terrific deal on this generator. I paid $950 for it after a hurricane about 7 years ago and it has been awesome. Not low THD, but I've ran tvs and computers on it and had no issues...

Looks like this only has a 30A 240V receptacle, not 50A. Odd for this capacity, and will limit what you can backfeed your panel to 7200W if that's your intent.

I did this in a previous home and ~ halved the inrush. That said, might not be worth it running whole home AC with a unit this small. Most people in hurricane-prone areas will run window units when the mains is down.

I use Stabil Marine in all my stored gasoline, after buying a JD mower years ago and was told to always use it. It's not like it's an expensive additive so all my machines get it. That said, I store my generator with an empty tank and carb. I run it dry before storing.

Generator Bible lists it as "unknown", and there's no mention of it on Generac's site which tells me it's a store-specific model. Manual [generac.com]does not mention it either.

Generators don't tend to have 50A outlets until the nominal is ~>10kw. That's not a hard limit, but 50A@240V is 12kw. Generally speaking manufacturers won't put accessories on units that could exceed their capacity, for example in your house, you could use a 20A receptacle in a 15A circuit. The plug would physically fit and would function. That said, you could also be a dummy that would plug in something that actually requires 20A thinking it would be OK. Provided the breaker is sized for 15A you will be OK (breaker will trip), but it's just bad practice.

I have a similarly sized (12k) portable generator with a 220v 50 amp cable that I use for my 3000sqft house. I can run everything in the house except for the central air conditioner, or the clothes dryer, or wall oven. I could run any one of those three but not 2 of them . The rest of the house only uses 20A under normal conditions, FYI gas heat & hot water.

It has wheels and a handle.

It's a big generator, the weight is to be expected.

\nI did this in a previous home and ~ halved the inrush. That said, might not be worth it running whole home AC with a unit this small. Most people in hurricane-prone areas will run window units when the mains is down.

\n It's a good price for a 9,000 watt generator with pretty good reviews. Just wish it had auto-idle and I'm curious what the THD is on this unit.\n

\n

\nGenerator Bible lists it as "unknown", and there's no mention of it on Generac's site which tells me it's a store-specific model. Manual [generac.com]does not mention it either.

\n Looks like this only has a 30A 240V receptacle, not 50A. Odd for this capacity, and will limit what you can backfeed your panel to 7200W if that's your intent.\n

\n

\nGenerators don't tend to have 50A outlets until the nominal is ~>10kw. Provided the breaker is sized for 15A you will be OK (breaker will trip), but it's just bad practice.","hideTimestamp":false,"timestampFormatted":"08-26-2024 at 10:53 AM.","isoDatetime":"2024-08-26T10:53:15-07:00","permalink":"/f/17715747-costco-699-99-generac-gp9200e-9200w-running-11250w-peak-gas-powered-generator-699-99?p=172548696#post172548696","postId":172548696},"commentSectionCommentFooter":[],"commentIsHelpful":null,"commentGiveRepPopover":{"username":"Dr. J","userAvatar":"/attachment/avatar/7/9/3/3/4/150x150/avatar.normal?dateline=1408498616","headline":"Say Thanks & Give Rep!","subtext":"","authorText":"Dr. J posted this comment. \n I seriously doubt this generator would be able to service everything you need. All that being said, this is a pretty darn good deal for a Generac that is basically 10K.\n

\n

\nI have a similarly sized (12k) portable generator with a 220v 50 amp cable that I use for my 3000sqft house. I can run everything in the house except for the central air conditioner, or the clothes dryer, or wall oven. I could run any one of those three but not 2 of them . The rest of the house only uses 20A under normal conditions, FYI gas heat & hot water.","hideTimestamp":false,"timestampFormatted":"08-26-2024 at 11:21 AM.","isoDatetime":"2024-08-26T11:21:37-07:00","permalink":"/f/17715747-costco-699-99-generac-gp9200e-9200w-running-11250w-peak-gas-powered-generator-699-99?p=172549176#post172549176","postId":172549176},"commentSectionCommentFooter":{"editedText":"Last edited by CoolMoney1870 August 26, 2024 at 11:40 AM."},"commentIsHelpful":null,"commentGiveRepPopover":{"username":"CoolMoney1870","userAvatar":"/images/avatar/sd/redesign/Comment-Box.png","headline":"Say Thanks & Give Rep!","subtext":"","authorText":"CoolMoney1870 posted this comment.
